Nineteen (19) people on Monday, July 20, died of Covid-19, announced the Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Dr. Rashid Aman.

Dr. Aman said the country’s death toll is now at 253.

Speaking during the daily Covid-19 briefings, the CAS said the total number of confirmed cases has shot to 13,771 after 418 other persons tested positive for the novel virus in the last 24 hours.

The new cases were detected from 2,474 samples tested between Sunday and Monday.

Out of the 418, four hundred and eight (408) are Kenyans and 10 are foreign nationals. They are aged between 1 year and 86 years.

The latest figures consisted of 263 males and 155 females.

Dr. Aman decried over lack of seriousness about the disease among Nairobi residents saying that counties of Nairobi and Mombasa are still producing high number of cases.

"I'm saddened that here in Nairobi where numbers are growing in their hundreds, a lot of people do not seem to care. Let us not behave like doubting Thomases..," he said.

He also hit out at leaders for violating Covid-19 rules imposed by the Ministry of Health and cautioned Kenyans against holding gatherings noting that community transmission has taken root in 44 out of 47 counties.

Counties that are yet to report positive cases are Baringo, West Pokot and Samburu.

“We have witnessed misbehaviour from our leaders as well.

“This situation should jolt us. It seems that this message has not sunk very well with our people. We have witnessed misbehaviour from our leaders as well.  Some don't even believe in the figures given by the government. The country has relaxed cessation movement. But in some parts of the country, there are incidences of mourners eating together,” he added.

At the same time, Dr, Aman confirmed that 494 patients have recovered from the virus raising the number of recoveries to 5,616.
