By Jorge dos Santos*

Mozambique extradited the drug baron Gilberto Aparecido dos Santos, known as Fuminho, to brasil, following the arrest in Maputo on Monday by officers of criminal investigation service SERNIC.

Fuminho was extradited in a secret operation for security reasons, a source told Pan African Visions.

He is also banned from national territory for a period of not less than 10 years, following the administrative expulsion of the Mozambican authorities based on illegal immigration of the leader of one of the world’s largest drug trafficking networks.

Authorities in Brazil say that he is the largest cocaine supplier to the international criminal gang First Command of the Capital. Fuminho has been wanted by the Brazilian police and Interpol since 1999 after he escaped from a São Paulo prison, and moved to southern Africa for his safety.

Brazil issued an international arrest warrant two years ago. Police said there was no evidence that Dos Santos had previously been to Mozambique.

His arrest in Mozambique resulted from a collaborative operation including the US Department of Justice and the Mozambican police.
