Gambian Chief Justice Gets Nomination from ECOWAS Group

Hassan Bubacar Jallow, Chief Justice of The Gambia has been nominated by the ECOWAS Group of Ambassadors in Addis Ababa, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to represent the West Africa Region in the African Union Panel of EminentAfricans to oversee the pre-selection of the candidates of the senior leadership of the African Union Commission.

In a press release from the  Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad of the Republic of The Gambia is pleased to inform the general public that Honourable Hassan Bubacar Jallow, Chief Justice of The Gambia has been nominated by the ECOWAS Group of Ambassadors in Addis Ababa, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to represent the West Africa Region in the African Union Panel of EminentAfricans to oversee the pre-selection of the candidates of the senior leadership of the African Union Commission.

The candidates to be pre-selected will be competing to become the next Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson and Commissioners of the African Union Commission during the elections to be held in 2021 when the terms of the current office holders have elapsed.

The other Panel members are also individuals with distinguished career track records and international standings from the Central, East, North and South Regions of the African Union. They will also coordinate all the technical processes that will lead to the pre-selection of the best candidates to be appointed by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union as the next Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson and Commissioners of the African Union Commission.

The African Union Panel of Eminent Africans was created through Decision Ext/Assembly/AU/Dec.1(XI) of the 11th Extraordinary Summit of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union held from 17th to 18th November, 2018 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Panel is part of the comprehensive reform package being implemented to ensure that the Africans with the right administrative and technical competences are appointed to leadership positions at the African Union Commission and the other Organs of the African Union.

The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad and the entire Foreign Service of The Gambia congratulate Honourable Justice Jallow on his nomination as a member of the African Union Panel of Eminent Africans on the pre-selection of the candidates to vie to become the next Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson and Commissioners of the African Union Commission.
