The man was on June 17 arraigned in Eldoret’s Chief Magistrate court and charged with impersonation after being nabbed at the County hospital, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) where he was working as a female nursing intern. The court was told the suspect was working at the emergency wing using the name Pamela Mulupi. His presence at the hospital brought suspicion among nurses given the name was not in the list of interns forcing them to alert the police. He was arrested while dressed in the nurse’s uniform complete with a badge. Once charged, he was detained at Eldoret Women Prison as he had been arraigned as a woman. The suspect was then established to be a man one day after remand by wardens during the normal routine check. The wardens carried out physical examination to satisfy their curiosity. While before the Chief Magistrate Charles Obulutsa, Kiprotich identified as Chepkosgey admitted that he is a man noting he associates more with the female gender. His documents such as passport, National Identification card and birth certificate produced in court indicated that he is a female. The court was told that he had presented Kenya in marathons in Zambia, Tanzania, Malaysia and Morocco and won three medals. “I was identified as a male, but when I became an athlete, I registered myself as a female,” reiterated the suspect. The Magistrate ordered him to be put in remand for 10 days pending investigations over his documents. He further directed the hospital to carry medical examination on him to determine his gender. “As I issue this order I even do not know whether the suspect will be detained in male or female cells. I hope the investigating officer will use his wisdom to ensure that the suspect is detained at a right place,” said the magistrate.
