What’s gone wrong in South Sudan?
July 9, 2016
Street battles in South Sudan’s capital Juba are threatening to reverse the gains of a recent peace process on the eve of the country’s fifth anniversary.
After civil war began in 2013, negotiators pored over the details dividing the rival camps.
Not least, on how to integrate government and rebel fighters who’d split largely along ethnic lines.
And now, almost a year since an agreement between President Salva Kiir and former rebel leader Riek Machar was signed, the merging of the forces still has not happened.
But how did the euphoria of independence from Khartoum just five years ago end so soon?
Presenter: Martine Dennis

Ateny Wek Ateny – Spokesman for South Sudanese President Salva SKiir.
Alex de Waal – Executive Director at the World Peace Foundation at Tufts University and author on South Sudan.
