More than 3,000 whites were forced off their lands when the Zanu PF politburo unleashed veterans of the liberation struggle on the white commercial farming community, apparently angered by Britain’s refusal to fund land reforms. A few hundred remained and it was these Mugabe was thought to be targeting when he declared: “We say no to whites owning our land, and they should go. “They can own companies and apartments … but not the soil. It is ours and that message should ring loud and clear in Britain and the United States.” The 90 year-old leader was addressing party loyalists at a recent meeting in his Mashonaland West home province, also the country’s agricultural hub. The remarks drew widespread condemnation with ordinary Zimbabweans saying their aging leader’s racist tirades were unhelpful at a time the country was trying to re-engage the West to help mend its failing economy. Among those disgusted by Mugabe’s rants was MDC-T Zvishavane senator Lillian Timveos who quizzed Mnangagwa during Senate session last week on whether Mugabe was overriding the constitution which granted all Zimbabweans of whatever race the right to own property. In his response, the justice minister did little to hide his usually fawning defence of his boss, claiming Mugabe was “misunderstood”. “Assuming that he said what you say, which of course is not correct, the President is very clear on that issue,” he said. Mnangagwa, a top Mugabe aide, said white Zimbabweans were not barred from land ownership under the country’s constitution. He said whites were among land beneficiaries during Zimbabwe’s chaotic land reform at the turn of the century with some of them getting offer letters. “You misunderstood him, but let me explain to you so that you do not have problems,” said Mnangagwa. “The President said that those farmers, black or white, who have been issued with land and proceed to sublease to the whites who owned the land before; that is not allowed. This is one reason why we are talking about land audit,” he said. Mnangagwa delved into history, reminding the legislators on how the first white settlers robbed the resource from indigenous blacks, how the eventual return of the land came at a massive cost in terms of lives lost during the liberation war and how a triumphant black government later took steps through constitutional amendments to restore the resource to black ownership. In later years, he said, 265,000 Zimbabwean families found descent land when Mugabe’s land policies sought to undo an inverse land ownership pattern where 4,500 whites owned over 70 per cent of agricultural land. Mnangagwa also said, in remarks which did little to camouflage his own racist inclination: “But, because Zimbabweans are a good people, this is why we even allowed the former thieves to be allocated land.” He went on: “So, when His Excellency, the President pronounced ‘Banket’, he never said no white man shall own land. That is not correct. “There is not a single province in this country where there are no white farmers. We have white farmers all over, who we have allowed to continue holding land and issued offer letters to them to own the land. “So, we are not in conflict with the Constitution. Our current Constitution gives right of ownership of property to citizens and if those white people that you are talking about are citizens, they have equal right like anybody else to own property in this country. “So there is no discrimination at all. We are actually teachers of democracy. I would be willing to have people like you to go to Britain and teach them democracy because they came here, looted in our country, colonised us and took our property. “Then, when we have taken it back, we were good enough and more civilised than them to allow them to stay as well as to own property.” Mnangagwa said Mugabe’s rants were aimed at black land beneficiaries who were sub-letting land to former white landlords. “… I hope that I have done some justice to your question and that the primary value is that, we as Zimbabweans are democratic, are Christian, are civilized and we do not apply the barbaric principles of the whites like when they occupied this country.” Mnangagwa has since fitted well into being a defender of his misfiring presidium. He recently came to the defence of Vice President Joice Mujuru’s foot-in-mouth rant at journalists reporting about massive high level corruption in Zimbabwe. *allafrica.com]]>

How is it racist to take back the land so that is indigenous inhabitants can enjoy the fruits of their home land? Bottom line is w White’s in Africa are immigrants and should be treated as such. If they want land tell them to go to Europe! No White’s should ever account for me then 20% of anything in Africa! & if you are black and disagree them you clearly are a Negropean and have forgotten the blood stains of slavery and your everything being put into a meat grinder! How they took your people and put them on display like zoo animals that was 60 years ago not that long that could’ve been your grandmother in those cages?

The fight for land by the majority black population in Zimbabwe is legitimate and must be respected. We accept and respect our white friends as partners and not our masters. Gone are the days when they could order us around like some counterfeit.
Mr. Mugabe is not a saint but remains a true African patriot and nationalist to the core. He is one of the few if not the only freedom fighter to have been bold enough to take the liberation struggle from a politic lip service and “galleric” dance to the economic realm. The arguments that he has been in power for too long are acceptable but not very strong to dampen his achievements.
Besides, those of them who re there for this long should only show prove of their achievements. The strongman of Equatorial Guinea is a good example but the neighbour in Cameroon is basking in the glories of the sixties. Whether we like it or not, all those referring to good old Bob as a dictator would praise him tomorrow. South Africa may postpone its own solution to the land problem over there but if care is not taken, when it happens, Zimbabwe’s case would be just a storm in a tea cup!
