Cameroon: Wotutu-Ewongo Turns to Football to Rebuild a Community Battered by Conflict

WOTUTU-EWONGO, PAV – For a community that has endured years of disruption, fear and separation, the sight of hundreds of inhabitants gathering for a football final in Wotutu-Ewongo carried a significance that extended well beyond the result.

When Ngokes FC defeated Dream Team 2-1 on Sunday 30 August to win the sixth edition of the Wotutu-Ewongo Interquarter Football Competition, the celebrations marked not only a sporting achievement but also the community’s resilience.

Ngokes’ victory brought its own story of redemption. The team had suffered heartbreak in the 2024 final, losing 1-0 to Mami Dinga FC. Two years later, it returned to the decisive match and this time emerged as champions.

But the tournament’s organisers say the more important victory has been the gradual restoration of community life in an area deeply affected by Cameroon’s Anglophone crisis.

Held under the theme “Football for Hope and Resilience”, the competition has evolved from a holiday football tournament into a platform for bringing people together, engaging young people and encouraging social cohesion.

The large turnout for Sunday’s final was one of the clearest signs of that change. In a community where conflict has fractured social relationships and disrupted everyday activities, inhabitants were able to gather openly, support their teams, and share an occasion centred on sport rather than violence or division.

The Wotutu-Ewongo Interquarter Football Competition was created not simply to provide entertainment during the holidays but to give young people a constructive activity while helping the community rebuild relationships weakened by years of instability.

Edwin Eselem, the promoter of the Wotutu-Ewongo Interquarter Football Tournament, believes football has a particular ability to achieve this because it provides a common interest capable of bringing together people from different quarters and backgrounds.

Ngokes FC lift the trophy after defeating Dream Team 2-1 in the final of the 6th edition of the Wotutu-Ewongo Interquarter Football Tournament.

From conflict to resilience

Wotutu-Ewongo, like many communities in Cameroon’s North West and South West regions, has experienced the consequences of the Anglophone crisis, which has affected livelihoods, education, social interaction and community life.

The disruption has created an environment in which young people have often faced limited opportunities to engage in organised recreational activities. The interquarter tournament emerged against that background.

Rather than allowing the holiday period to become another period of idleness and disengagement, Edwin Eselem sought to create an activity around which young people could meet, compete and build relationships. The result has been a competition that now carries a wider social message.

The theme for the competition, as it has been since the inception of the tournament, was deliberately framed around hope and resilience. Hope reflects the desire for a better future, while resilience speaks to the community’s determination to recover from the effects of conflict and rebuild despite the difficulties it has experienced.

The crowd that gathered to watch Dream Team and Ngokes FC was itself part of the story. Football provided the reason for the gathering, but the event also offered inhabitants a chance to reconnect and reclaim a sense of normality.

For communities affected by prolonged conflict, such moments can be significant. Recovery is not only about roads, buildings or economic activity; it also involves restoring trust, social relationships and spaces where people can meet without fear. The Wotutu-Ewongo tournament is attempting to contribute to that process at the community level.

Fans turn out in large numbers to support the Wotutu-Ewongo tournament.

More than a football competition

The tournament was founded and is organised by Edwin Eselem, popularly known as EddyBobo, a communications professional and author of From Wotutu to the World. Eselem has positioned the competition as an initiative that uses the popularity and convening power of football to encourage peace and strengthen community bonds.

The annual competition brings together football teams from villages in the Wotutu-Ewongo area of the Bonjongo Court during the holiday season. Its original purpose was to keep young people occupied during vacation, but the organisers have increasingly emphasised its role in promoting peace and social cohesion.

That wider ambition has helped transform the tournament into a milestone event for the community. The importance of youth engagement is particularly relevant in a conflict-affected environment. Giving young people opportunities to participate in sport can provide alternatives to idleness while creating opportunities for teamwork, discipline and interaction.

It can also allow young people to see themselves not only as victims of circumstances but as participants in rebuilding their communities. Rather than treating football as an end in itself, they have used it as a vehicle for creating conversations, relationships and a shared community identity.

Ngokes FC’s triumph therefore provided the perfect sporting conclusion to an edition built around resilience. The team had experienced defeat in the 2024 final, when Mami Dinga FC ended its hopes with a narrow 1-0 victory. Its return to the final and eventual triumph offered a sporting illustration of persistence after disappointment.

This was a beautiful read and it definitely highlights the importance of Youth participation in rebuilding broken communities starting with theirs. This often terms comes from activities like this and could now spread out their individual activities or individual acts of service in their communities. Great job Mr Edwin Eselem. This is truly inspiring. Congratulations to Ngokes FC, winners of this year’s tournament.
