Why Visibility Without Commercial Strategy Is No Longer Enough

Being seen has never been the hard part. Staying relevant once you are seen - that's where most businesses quietly fail.

By Noni Sophe, Founder, Libango SA

For years, companies have been told the same thing: get visible. Get featured. Get followers. Get impressions. It is advice that made sense in a market where visibility was scarce. It makes far less sense now, in a market where everyone is visible and almost nobody is memorable.

The question I ask every client at Libango is not “how do we get you seen?” It is “what should your visibility be building toward?” Those are two very different briefs, and the gap between them is where most communications spend gets wasted.

Visibility was never the goal — it was always the mechanism

Media coverage, social presence, event appearances, thought leadership — none of it is an outcome. It’s infrastructure. The outcome is what that infrastructure makes possible: the client who takes your call because they have seen your name attached to the right conversations. The investor who already trusts your category before you have pitched them. The partnership that opens because your reputation preceded the relationship.

When visibility is not tied to a commercial strategy, businesses end up with a familiar problem: strong brand recognition and a stagnant pipeline. They’re known. They’re just not converting that recognition into anything measurable. And in a market this crowded, “known” without “chosen” is an expensive place to sit.

This is the shift I think our industry has been slow to make. Communications has spent two decades optimising for reach and sentiment. The businesses that are actually growing right now are the ones asking a harder question of every campaign, every feature, every stage appearance: what does this create commercially? Not eventually. Not abstractly. Specifically.

A South African business, built with commercial precision

Libango SA is a South African company — built in Cape Town, shaped by South African expertise, and unapologetic about where it comes from. We are not a regional franchise of someone else’s idea of African communications. Our thinking, our relationships and our commercial instincts are built here first.

That South African foundation is precisely what makes us useful to businesses looking beyond South Africa’s borders. African markets are not one market, and they don’t reward companies that treat them as an afterthought to a global strategy built elsewhere. They reward precision — an understanding of which relationships open doors, which conversations build credibility, and which moves actually translate into commercial traction on the ground.

That’s increasingly where Libango sits: helping global companies enter African markets with the kind of precision that visibility alone can’t buy. Not a generic “African expansion” plan lifted from a template, but a strategy built around how reputation, relationships and commercial opportunity actually move in this region. Getting a global brand noticed in an African market is the easy part. Getting it trusted, positioned and commercially embedded is the work — and it’s the work that determines whether the expansion was worth making.

What visibility should actually be doing

I tell clients this often: visibility should be working while you’re not in the room. It should be doing the groundwork before the meeting starts – softening resistance, building familiarity, establishing credibility, so that by the time you’re pitching, half the case has already been made for you.

That only happens when visibility is built with commercial intent from the outset –  when every media placement, every piece of thought leadership, every public appearance is chosen because of what it moves toward, not just what it’s seen by.

The businesses that will win the next decade won’t be the loudest ones. They will be the ones whose visibility was never separate from their commercial strategy in the first place — where every appearance was doing double duty, building both reputation and revenue at once.

That is the standard I hold Libango to, and it’s the standard I would encourage any business — South African, African or global — to hold their communications partner to. Being seen was always going to be step one. The real question, the one worth building a strategy around, is what that visibility is actually for.
