Malawi President Peter Mutharika has led the nation in mourning the sudden passing of Brian Banda, the Director General of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).
Banda, a towering figure in Malawian media, passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre following a short illness. He was 45 years old.
In an official statement Mutharika described Banda as a patriot and a media icon whose professional contributions left an indelible mark on the nation.
The president noted that Banda was not just a broadcaster, but a dedicated public servant and a voice that resonated in many Malawian homes for decades. He concluded by stating that he joins all Malawians in prayer during this incredibly difficult time.
The Media Council of Malawi and the Media Institute of Southern Africa Malawi Chapter issued joint expressions of shock, calling Banda’s death a devastating blow to the advancement of broadcasting standards in the country.
Speaker of the National Assembly Sameer Suleiman also extended condolences on behalf of Parliament, stating that Banda’s legacy of professionalism and passion for national development will be fiercely missed.
Banda’s career spanned over two decades, during which he established himself as one of Malawi’s most formidable media personalities. He initially rose to national fame at Times Group, where he hosted the hard-hitting political talk show Hot Current, which was well-known for holding public figures accountable.
He later transitioned into public service, serving as the Press Secretary for former President Lazarus Chakwera, before taking the helm at the state broadcaster, MBC, where he was steering a modern restructuring phase as Director General at the time of his passing.
Colleagues, politicians, and everyday citizens have begun gathering to pay their final respects. The funeral vigil is currently underway at Group Village Headman M’banda in Chileka, Blantyre. Banda will be laid to rest on Monday, August 10, 2026, at his home village in Chileka.
