Cameroonian documentary filmmaker, photographer and cultural entrepreneur Ngwane E. Kwame, professionally known as Kreative Kwame, has added another major international milestone to his growing career after securing a prestigious development grant from the inaugural VII Foundation Film Lab in France.
The award positions the University of Buea journalism graduate among an emerging generation of documentary filmmakers whose work is bringing underrepresented stories from Africa to global audiences.
Selected from an international pool of filmmakers, Kreative Kwame joined the inaugural edition of the VII Foundation Film Lab, an elite mentorship and documentary development programme that brought together 12 filmmakers from 12 countries across four continents. Following an intensive month-long virtual programme in June and an in-person residency in southern France, his documentary proposal was selected as one of only three projects to receive production funding.
According to the VII Foundation, the grants will help the filmmakers further develop documentaries rooted in their communities while addressing important social realities.
In announcing the winners, the Foundation stated:
“Celebrating this year’s three Film Lab grant winners: Ebrahim Alipoor, Nanuka Kutibashvili, and Kreative Kwame.Selected by their specialist jury following this year’s Film Lab, the three visual storytellers are developing documentary projects rooted in the communities, identities, and social realities of Kurdistan (Iran), Georgia, and Cameroon.The grants will support Kreative, Nanuka and Ebrahim as they continue developing their projects.”
Founded by internationally acclaimed American photojournalists, the VII Foundation has become one of the world’s leading documentary education institutions, having trained more than 1,400 journalists across 130 countries in 11 languages while supporting exhibitions and long-term visual storytelling initiatives that amplify voices from regions where press freedom remains fragile.
The inaugural Film Lab featured mentorship from an impressive panel of internationally recognised documentary professionals, including Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Fiona Turner, executive producers Mandy Chang and Sue Turley, acclaimed director Bao Nguyen, known for his Netflix documentary work, and VII Foundation President Gary Knight, who also served on the jury evaluating the final documentary pitches.
Telling Africa’s Space Story
Kreative Kwame’s winning documentary explores one of Africa’s most overlooked innovation stories.
The film follows the remarkable journey of a 22-year-old Cameroonian engineering student who has developed a prototype rocket while examining the broader ambitions of young Cameroonians determined to build careers and innovations in aerospace and space science despite limited resources.
Rather than focusing solely on technological achievement, the documentary examines the determination, imagination and resilience driving a new generation of African innovators seeking to redefine what is possible on the continent.
The project reflects Kwame’s long-standing commitment to documenting stories that challenge stereotypes and reveal overlooked dimensions of African society.
A Career Built on Purposeful Storytelling
The France grant is the latest chapter in a career that has consistently combined visual storytelling with social impact.
Kreative Kwame first attracted international attention in 2019, when he became the only Cameroonian photographer selected for a collective exhibition marking the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations. Displayed in Geneva, Paris and New York, his work highlighted the experiences and challenges faced by persons living with albinism.
Since then, his projects have consistently fused art, documentary practice and community development.
In 2022, he co-organised and curated the We’re All Liquid exhibition in Douala, bringing together artists from Cameroon’s Far North, South-West, Centre and Littoral regions. The initiative explored water as both an artistic and social theme while raising funds to construct a borehole in Debundscha, ultimately benefiting more than 750 children and community members with improved access to clean water.
The same year, he partnered with Dutch artist Eva Boeree to showcase Cameroonian art in the Netherlands during the EARTH WATER anniversary celebrations, helping introduce contemporary Cameroonian artists to European audiences.
Their collaboration also produced the WAL Photo Prize, an initiative awarding 100,000 CFA francs annually to documentary and fine-art photographers, encouraging emerging visual storytellers to continue documenting their communities.
Championing Cameroonian Arts
Beyond filmmaking, Kreative Kwame has established himself as one of Cameroon’s most dynamic cultural entrepreneurs.
In 2024, he curated a rare all-photography exhibition at the prestigious Annie Kadji Art Gallery for Indian photographer Rithika Thadani, further strengthening Cameroon’s position as an important destination for international artistic collaboration.
His growing influence was recognised nationally when he received the Arts for a Social Cause Prize at the Cameroon Youth Awards, honouring his ability to combine artistic excellence with meaningful social engagement.
Reimagining African Narratives
Kwame’s international profile continued to rise in 2025, when he became part of the inaugural Nature Environment Wildlife Filmmakers (NEWF) Reimagining African Narratives Fellowship.
The fellowship took him to South Africa, where he received mentorship from internationally acclaimed documentary filmmakers, award-winning curators and World Press Photo laureates committed to reshaping how Africa is portrayed through visual media.
Upon returning to Cameroon, he delivered a widely praised TEDx Douala talk titled “Transforming Constraint to Content Gold,” encouraging young creatives to view limited resources not as barriers but as catalysts for innovation.
His philosophy echoes throughout his work.
“Art that remains is art that makes us feel something.”
The quote has become both his creative compass and a reflection of his belief that documentary storytelling should leave audiences emotionally engaged while inspiring meaningful conversations.
Looking Ahead
Kwame returned to South Africa in 2026 to participate in the exclusive NEWF Congress, further strengthening his international network among documentary filmmakers committed to telling authentic African stories.
At home, he continues expanding ALAKIND, his creative production company, which is developing what he describes as an innovative cultural festival designed to celebrate storytelling and artistic collaboration in ways not previously seen in Cameroon.
The VII Foundation award provides fresh momentum for those ambitions while offering international recognition for a filmmaker whose career increasingly bridges journalism, documentary filmmaking, photography, community engagement and cultural entrepreneurship.
As African creatives gain greater visibility on the global stage, Kreative Kwame’s journey illustrates how authentic local stories—told with creativity, empathy and purpose—can resonate far beyond national borders. His latest success is not only a personal achievement but also another affirmation that Cameroon continues to produce storytellers capable of shaping international conversations through powerful visual narratives.
