Look across Africa’s technology sector today, and you’ll find women shaping its future from every direction. They’re running technology and data functions inside leading banks, telecoms operators and public institutions. They’re founding high-growth ventures in health, agriculture and financial services. They’re helping write the policies that guide digital transformation. The leadership and the talent are here. What’s needed now is for the rest of the ecosystem to catch up.
There’s real reason for optimism. A recent report by the African Private Capital Association shows that Africa’s private capital industry already outperforms global benchmarks in gender representation at the fund level, with women holding well over a third of investment professional and investment committee roles. And where committees are more balanced, they back women-led businesses more often, and those businesses tend to grow faster than their male-led counterparts. It’s a pattern worth building on.
The pipeline is growing too. The third edition of Disrupt Africa’s Diversity Dividend: Exploring Gender Equality in the African Tech Ecosystem reports that the share of African startups with at least one female co-founder has climbed from under 15% three years ago to close to one in five today. Yet women-led ventures still receive only a small slice of startup funding, despite consistently strong performance. Africa is clearly producing exceptional women founders. What hasn’t kept pace is the capital reaching them.
Mentorship and visibility programmes deserve real credit here. They’ve opened doors, built networks, and helped many women in tech get to where they are today. Africa Tech Festival will continue to champion that work because representation still matters. But the conversation has moved on from creating opportunities for individuals to fixing the systems that decide whether those opportunities turn into something lasting.
Procurement is a good place to start. Governments, telecoms operators, banks and large enterprises across Africa spend billions each year on technology and infrastructure. Making space for more women-owned businesses within that spending is about widening access to opportunity and making better use of the investment already taking place.
Funding mandates offer another way forward. Development banks, specialist venture funds and large companies’ innovation teams are all well placed to set clear goals for backing women-led ventures, and to be open about how they’re tracking against them. Where this has been tried, the results speak for themselves. In its Financing Women’s Digital Entrepreneurship research, Boston Consulting Group cites the example of Uganda, where mobile lending schemes lifted women entrepreneurs’ profits by 15% in just eight months. Nobody needs to invent a new approach. What’s needed is more consistency and more scale.
None of this happens overnight. It takes sustained commitment from universities, incubators, investors, corporations, and policymakers alike to ensure women entrepreneurs continue to receive support well beyond their first few years in business. Backing great founders matters, but so does building the systems that keep producing them.
This is exactly the kind of conversation Africa Tech Festival exists for. The women taking to our stages and attending as delegates this year aren’t just talking about barriers from the sidelines. They’re the executives allocating technology budgets, the founders scaling companies, the investors deploying capital and the policymakers shaping what comes next. Their presence says a lot about where real influence in this industry already sits.
