Rwanda has secured one of the most visible sports marketing partnerships in global football after Visit Rwanda was unveiled as the new Front-of-Shirt Partner, Exclusive Official Tourism Partner, and Official Coffee Partner of English Premier League club Aston Villa.
The landmark agreement marks a new phase in Rwanda’s international branding strategy, placing the East African nation at the center of one of the world’s most watched sporting competitions while strengthening efforts to attract tourism, investment, trade and international business. The announcement was made by Rwanda Development Board (RDB) Chief Executive Officer Jean-Guy K. Afrika, who described the partnership as an opportunity to tell Rwanda’s story to millions of people around the world.
“A new chapter begins. Visit Rwanda is proud to partner with Aston Villa FC as the Club’s Front-of-Shirt Partner, Exclusive Official Tourism Partner, and Official Coffee Partner,” Afrika announced.
He said the partnership would provide Rwanda with “a powerful way to bring Rwanda closer to millions of people around the world, inviting them to visit, invest, do business and discover the energy and opportunity shaping our country.” Afrika added that Rwanda’s strong economic performance, including 9.4 percent growth in 2025, and its reputation as one of Africa’s easiest places to do business position the country to leverage the global visibility offered by Aston Villa.
The agreement represents a significant upgrade in Rwanda’s sports diplomacy and destination marketing strategy. Having previously gained global recognition through partnerships with leading European football clubs, the Aston Villa deal gives Visit Rwanda even greater prominence by placing the country’s tourism brand on the front of the club’s match jerseys, exposing it to hundreds of millions of viewers throughout the Premier League season.
Beyond tourism promotion, the inclusion of Rwanda as the club’s Official Coffee Partner also highlights the country’s ambition to promote its internationally acclaimed specialty coffee industry to new global consumers, while reinforcing Rwanda’s broader investment narrative across agriculture, manufacturing, innovation and trade.
The announcement was met with overwhelmingly positive reactions from business leaders, tourism professionals and international development experts, many describing it as another milestone in Rwanda’s growing global profile.
Founder and CEO of RIC Brands, Wilbert Chaniwa, congratulated the Rwanda Development Board, describing the agreement as “a masterclass in brand-building at scale.” He said the partnership reflected growing international confidence in Rwanda’s development trajectory and praised the decision to include coffee alongside tourism, noting that it gives Rwandan coffee producers unprecedented international visibility.
Tourism entrepreneur Omar Kalisa, Chief Executive Officer of Kalisa Safaris & Tours, called the agreement “a landmark achievement for Rwanda,” saying it strengthens the country’s position as a premier destination not only for tourism but also for investment, business and innovation. He said the partnership demonstrates how Rwanda continues to use world-class global platforms to showcase its development story.
Honorary Consul of Ethiopia in Finland Natalia Sabure described the partnership as “country positioning at scale,” observing that the campaign successfully combines messages around tourism, investment and business in a simple but powerful global marketing platform.
Entrepreneur Ramy Osseiran said the agreement illustrates how sport has become “a powerful platform to promote tourism, investment, innovation and international business,” while communications professional Uwizeye John said the partnership represents another important step in positioning Rwanda as a leading destination for tourism, investment and innovation.
Others pointed to the wider significance of the announcement for Africa. Foreign relations student Theobald Ngimbwa suggested other East African Community countries could learn from Rwanda’s strategic branding approach, while investment lawyer Mohamed Aboshanab remarked simply: “It’s time for Africa.”
The excitement extended beyond Rwanda’s borders. Sports investment specialist Derek Stewart congratulated the Visit Rwanda and Rwanda Development Board teams, while numerous commentators described the agreement as historic, applauding Rwanda for continuing to raise its international profile through innovative public-private partnerships.
The Aston Villa agreement further strengthens Rwanda’s use of sport as an instrument of economic diplomacy. Rather than viewing football sponsorship solely as advertising, Kigali has consistently positioned such partnerships as vehicles to attract visitors, investors, conferences and international businesses while showcasing the country’s economic transformation.
With Aston Villa competing both domestically and in European competition, the Visit Rwanda brand is expected to gain unprecedented global exposure, reinforcing the country’s ambition to position itself as one of Africa’s leading destinations for tourism, investment, innovation and high-value exports. As Jean-Guy Afrika noted, the partnership is ultimately about sharing “the energy and opportunity shaping our country” with a worldwide audience.
