The African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARDA) has honoured former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo with a Special Recognition Award, celebrating a lifetime of leadership dedicated to Africa’s unity, economic transformation and sustainable development.
The award was presented on Saturday in Abeokuta by an ARDA delegation led by ARDA President Marie-Joséphine Sidibé as part of the association’s 20th anniversary commemorations. The recognition highlights Obasanjo’s enduring contribution to strengthening African cooperation and his long-standing advocacy for stronger continental institutions, industrial development and regional integration.
Throughout his decades of public service, Obasanjo has remained one of Africa’s most influential statesmen, consistently urging governments and private sector leaders to deepen collaboration, expand industrial capacity and pursue policies that enhance the continent’s economic resilience and long-term prosperity.
Presenting the award, Sidibé praised the former Nigerian leader’s lasting influence on Africa’s development agenda.
“Your legacy continues to remind us that leadership is measured not only by the offices one has held, but by the lives one has touched and the future one has helped to shape,” she said.
The tribute comes as ARDA celebrates two decades of supporting the growth of Africa’s downstream petroleum industry. Since its establishment, the association has worked to promote cleaner fuels, improve regional energy markets, strengthen fuel security and encourage greater investment across the continent’s refining, storage and distribution sectors.
By honouring Obasanjo, ARDA underscored the close relationship between visionary political leadership and sustainable industrial development. The association noted that the former president’s commitment to African cooperation continues to resonate with its mission of fostering collaboration among governments, regulators and industry stakeholders to build a more resilient and self-sufficient energy sector.
The recognition also reflects growing efforts across Africa to celebrate leaders whose contributions extend beyond national borders and have helped shape the continent’s broader development trajectory. Obasanjo has remained an active voice on issues ranging from governance and peacebuilding to economic integration and regional cooperation, earning widespread respect as one of Africa’s elder statesmen.
As Africa pursues greater energy security, industrialisation and economic integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), ARDA said the values embodied by Obasanjo’s leadership remain highly relevant. His emphasis on cooperation, institution-building and shared prosperity continues to inspire governments and industry leaders working toward a stronger, more interconnected Africa.
