The Border Management Authority (BMA) has successfully intercepted explosive cables valued at approximately R100,000, which were hidden in the luggage of a Malawian individual traveling on an Interlink bus at the Beitbridge Port of Entry.
BMA Acting Commissioner, retired Major-General David Chilembe, praised the alertness and professionalism of the border guards following the apprehension of the suspect coming from Malawi.
“This interception highlights the vigilance, professionalism, and commitment of our border guards, who are dedicated to identifying and preventing the transport of prohibited and hazardous materials across our entry points,” stated Chilembe.
On Sunday afternoon, a BMA border guard stopped an Interlink bus arriving from Malawi after noticing suspicious luggage during standard inspections.
Upon further investigation, explosive cables, which are legally classified as explosives, were discovered concealed within a bag of rice.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) Bomb Disposal Unit and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly referred to as the Hawks, were promptly called to the location to secure the explosives and carry out additional inquiries.
Chilembe emphasized that this interception reflects the Authority’s steadfast commitment to securing South Africa’s borders and protecting the public from significant security risks.
“The BMA will persist in collaborating closely with our law enforcement partners to tackle transnational organized crime and ensure that those who attempt to breach our laws face justice,” remarked Acting Commissioner Chilembe.
The Malawian individual has been held at the Musina Police Station in Limpopo. Ongoing investigations aim to uncover the origin, intended destination, and potential criminal networks associated with the explosives.
The BMA reiterated its determination to enhance border security through intelligence-driven operations, advanced risk profiling, and strong cooperation with law enforcement agencies to thwart illegal movements.
