President Peter Mutharika has dismissed what he described as politically motivated speculation surrounding the Presidency, insisting that false reports and rumors will not distract him from delivering on his administration’s priorities.
The President’s remarks follow recent claims suggesting that he delegated a cabinet minister to preside over a Cabinet meeting that he had convened on May 27, 2026, fueling public debate about his involvement in government affairs.
In a statement issued by Chief Secretary to the Government and Cabinet, Dr. Justin Saidi, President Mutharika reaffirmed his commitment to restoring economic stability, strengthening governance, and improving the delivery of public services across Malawi.
The statement stressed that the President remains fully engaged in the affairs of government and will not allow misinformation campaigns to divert his attention from the responsibilities entrusted to him by Malawians.
“No amount of rumor-mongering will alter the President’s focus or determination to serve the nation,” the statement indicated, emphasizing that Mutharika is actively leading government business and is far from being a ceremonial figure.
Addressing concerns over the delegation of authority, the Presidency explained that the President routinely assigns representation duties to the most appropriate officials based on the nature, objectives, and practical requirements of specific engagements.
According to the statement, such decisions are guided by considerations of efficiency, good governance, and prudent use of public resources rather than political considerations.
“These decisions are not driven by malice, apathy, or ill-intent. They are deliberate measures aimed at promoting effective governance while minimizing unnecessary public expenditure,” the statement concluded.
The clarification comes amid heightened political scrutiny as the government pursues its agenda of economic recovery, institutional reform, and improved public service delivery.
