Côte d’Ivoire has paid glowing tribute to Abebe Selassie, marking the end of his tenure as Director of the African Department at the International Monetary Fund.
The recognition came during a ceremony held on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C..
Delivering a message on behalf of the Ivorian government, Ambassador Ibrahima Touré conveyed the appreciation of the Minister of Economy, Finance and Budget, Adama Coulibaly, highlighting Selassie’s impactful collaboration with Côte d’Ivoire and the broader African continent.
Ivorian authorities praised Selassie as an exceptional leader whose tenure was defined by intellectual rigor, steadfast commitment, and a deep understanding of Africa’s economic realities. Under his leadership, the IMF’s African Department achieved notable progress despite a challenging global environment shaped by multiple crises and the lingering effects of the COVID-19.
For Côte d’Ivoire, the partnership with the IMF during Selassie’s tenure yielded tangible benefits. Continuous engagement and policy dialogue helped strengthen macroeconomic stability, advance structural reforms, and enhance the country’s economic resilience.

Beyond national gains, Selassie was also credited with helping reshape global perceptions of Africa—promoting a narrative that underscores the continent’s innovation, adaptability, and capacity to drive its own transformation.
As a mark of appreciation, Côte d’Ivoire presented Selassie with a symbolic gift: a traditional ceremonial outfit from the Tonkpi region in western Côte d’Ivoire. Ambassador Touré noted that the attire, traditionally worn by chiefs, represents dignity, honor, and wisdom.
The ceremony concluded with a reaffirmation of Côte d’Ivoire’s commitment to deepening its partnership with the IMF, signaling continued collaboration in pursuit of sustainable economic growth and development.
