The annual N’cwala Ceremony, one of the most revered cultural traditions of the Ngoni people, drew thousands of celebrants from across the region this year, including Malawi’s Vice-President, Jane Ansah.
Attending at the invitation of Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, Dr. Ansah’s presence underscored the deep historical and cultural ties that bind Malawi and Zambia. Her participation highlighted the enduring bonds between the two neighboring nations, rooted in shared heritage and longstanding people-to-people connections.

Held in Zambia’s Eastern Province, the N’cwala Ceremony is a centuries-old Ngoni tradition marking the symbolic tasting of the first fruits of the harvest. The celebration featured vibrant traditional dances, sacred rituals, and colorful displays of cultural pride, reflecting the richness of Ngoni heritage across borders.
As a special guest, Dr. Ansah emphasized the importance of preserving cultural traditions as a foundation for regional unity and cooperation. Her attendance was widely seen as a diplomatic gesture reinforcing friendship, mutual respect, and collaboration between Malawi and Zambia.

Beyond its cultural significance, the event served as a reminder of how shared traditions can strengthen regional solidarity. The ceremony once again demonstrated that cultural diplomacy remains a powerful bridge between nations, promoting unity in diversity across Southern Africa.
