Friends from ActionAid are appealing for support for Mozambique citizens who have been recently affected by severe floods which hit the Southern African country and other parts of the Southern Africa region like South Africa.
ActionAid International’s recent appeal message says Mozambique floods, families need help.
The international NGO said families in Mozambique are facing devastating floods, which have resulted in homes being swept away and farmland destroyed.
They said nearly 600,000 people are affected and thousands are displaced with no food, clean water, or shelter.
In Manhiça district of Mozambique, the water is said to have rose fast ,houses disappeared beneath the floods and roads were cut off, according to a resident, Elsa Manhique.
Manhique said farmland, the main source of food for many families in the country was destroyed.
| “The water took everything I had. We are asking for help with blankets, water, food, and land,” Manhique said. According to ActionAid International, Elsa’s story is one of thousands. |
| They say that families were trapped for days on rooftops and in trees, waiting to be rescued and many escaped with only their lives. ActionAid Mozambique is reported to be responding now, supporting evacuations, emergency shelters and women-led community groups delivering urgent aid, but needs are said to be growing fast. The NGO is appealing for donations to help families affected families access food, clean water, shelter and emergency support. |
They said floods and natural disasters are jeopardizing the lives and livelihoods of millions of people in Mozambique and around the world.
They add that fossil fuels and industrial agriculture are fuelling the destruction of the planet, increasing carbon emissions and pushing the world to the limit.
The Friends from ActionAid have thanked in advance for those who will be standing with communities at this critical time.
They say that donations will support locally women-led emergency response, helping families access food, clean water, shelter and protection at this point in time.
