President Lazarus Chakwera has conceded defeat in the recent general elections, acknowledging the significant lead of former President Arthur Peter Mutharika.
In a heartfelt televised address, Chakwera commended the electoral process for its transparency, despite noting minor discrepancies.
“After careful consideration, I have conceded defeat and congratulated President-elect Arthur Peter Mutharika on his victory,” Chakwera announced, emphasizing that the gap in votes was insurmountable.
The elections, held on Tuesday, drew 7 million eligible voters to the polls to select a new president, members of parliament, and local councilors for the next five years.
While Mutharika, leading the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), emerged as the frontrunner, Chakwera’s Malawi Congress Party (MCP) faced challenges, leading to protests from his supporters in the capital, Lilongwe.
In anticipation of the official results, businesses across major towns remained shuttered, reflecting security precautions amid ongoing tensions. Chakwera’s attempt to secure an injunction against the electoral body was dismissed by the courts just hours before his concession.
The Malawi Electoral Commission will announce the official results tonight.
