BUEA, September 4, 2023 – Andre Onana one of the most prolific goalkeepers in the world has confirmed his presence to join the lions in Garoua ahead of their last qualifying game against Burundi on September 12, 2023. His decision to unretire comes a few days after his call-up by the team manager and coach of the Indomitable Lions, Rigobert Song Bahanag.
Andre Onana in his recent tweet openly declared his love for his country as he put to bed, the uncertainty in the media since his name appeared among the 24-man list released by Rigobert Song on August 29 in a press conference in Yaoundé.
“In the world of football just like in life there are very crucial decisions we take. In recent months, I have been confronted with trials marked by injustice and manipulation. However, my unwavering love and attachment to my homeland, Cameroon, remains intact,” Andre Onana confesses.
“My desire to represent my country has never changed since my youthful age so nothing and no one can change that conviction. I am responding to the nation’s call that requires and merit to shine as a national team,” he added.
With his premature exit from the just-ended FIFA World Cup in Qatar that sparked controversies in the Lion’s den, and the involvement of the government at some point, Andre Onana was absent during the last AFCON 2023 qualifier game.
“I would like to salute the government which is working tirelessly to build a Cameroon better and for all. My deepest thoughts go to the Cameroonian people to whom I say thank you very much for their support and whom I look forward to seeing again,” Onana added.
“So see you on September 12 in Garoua for our qualification for the next African Football Cup of Nations.”
His tweet has brought in a lot of reassurance to many Cameroonians who had long been waiting for his return. Cameroon will face Burundi on September 12 with both sides locked on equal points in Group C, 4 points each. A draw will be enough to see Cameroon qualify for Ivory Coast.
The last game between Cameroon and Burundi in the AFCON 2023 Qualifiers came back in June 2022 with Cameroon picking up a 1-0 victory. The lone goal of that encounter was scored by Karl Toko Ekambi.
