Kenya Signs Strategic Civil Nuclear Cooperation With the US

By Samuel Ouma The government of Kenya and the United States, on December 15, 2022, signed a Memorandum of Understanding Concerning Strategic Civil Nuclear Cooperation (NCMOU). The signing of the MoU was done by US Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie D. Jenkins and Kenya's Cabinet Secretary of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Alfred Mutua. The deal will improve energy security cooperation and strengthen the diplomatic and economic relationship between the two countries. In a statement, US Government spokesperson Ned Price said the United States and Kenya have an enduring diplomatic relationship and long-standing cooperation in security, energy, and commerce. He added that their cooperation in nuclear energy, science, and technology can significantly contribute to clean energy goals, agricultural efforts, the availability of clean water, medical treatments, and more. “NCMOUs are diplomatic mechanisms that strengthen and expand strategic ties between the United States and a partner country by providing a framework for cooperation on civil nuclear issues and for engagement between experts from government, industry, national laboratories, and academic institutions,” said Mr. Ned Price.
