Kenya: Demolition Leaves Many homeless in Nairobi’s Mukuru Kwa Njenga slum

October 12, 2021

By Samuel Ouma Many people have been left homeless after the Kenyan government demolished buildings built on a road reserve in Nairobi's Mukuru Kwa Njenga slum. According to the government, the move was made to clear the way for the construction of the Nairobi Expressway. The development of Catherine Ndereba Road, according to Nairobi Deputy Regional Commissioner James Kianda, will connect the Nairobi Expressway with the Industrial Area and open up the slum to business. The emergency exit is expected to begin at the City Cabanas intersection and run to the Nairobi Railway Station. Under the supervision of police officers and road officials, the demolition exercise began on Monday morning. House and commercial structures have been leveled, destroying unfathomable amounts of property. Despite being compensated, the majority of individuals affected failed to depart. Kianda requested individuals in the road reserve to migrate to other places in a notice dated October 8, 2021, advising them against obstructing the exercise.
