Ghana:The Party Should Allow A Qualified Candidate To Challenge Me In NDC Flagbearership Race – Former President Mahama

October 18, 2021

By Maxwell Nkansah Former President John Mahama has asked supporters and leaders of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to allow members who want to contest in the party’s primaries ahead of the 2024 elections. Speaking at his ‘Thank you tour’ in Cape Coast, the 2020 flagbearer said the NDC, as its name clearly states, is a democratic party; therefore, qualified people who want to show interest in the primaries must not be prevented. His comment comes after media reports indicated that the former governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, might contest as flagbearer of the party in the upcoming primaries. According to the former President, the party must support whoever emerges victorious into the 2024 elections, and he is certain that God will give the party victory,” he added. Just recently, an Action Movement, a group within the party, demanded that former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, enter the party’s flag bearer race since, in the group’s view, the NDC must put its “best foot forward” in the 2024 general elections. A statement signed by the group’s leader, Mr. James Agbey, said: “Just like many party faithful is already drumming up support for Dr. Duffuor to enter the NDC presidential race, the Action Movement demands the entry of the former Finance Minister and any other NDC activist who is interested in making Ghana a better place”. The group said: “Ghanaians knows the NDC has the men to deliver good governance and can do better.  The NDC must form the decision to run the 2024 elections based on a united, prosperous and peaceful Ghana”. “The party must put its best foot forward”, the group noted, adding: “We strongly believe that Dr. Duffuor is a powerful metaphor of politicians who are ready and willing to oversee this transitioning of the governance systems”. “The old and tired political nepotism practiced by Ghana’s political elite must give way to a more objective, merit-based system”, the group said. President Mahama, further started that, the NDC is a democratic party, so all those who show interest and qualify to contest must be allowed to do so. he said.
