Kenya: Preparations Under Way for Papal Visit Next Month

pope-francis-600Preparations are under way in anticipation for Pope Francis’ three-day visit to Kenya in November.

Kenya will be the first touchdown for the Pope in his African tour before heading to Uganda and later the Central African Republic.

The Pope is expected to arrive in the country on Wednesday, November 25 and leave for Uganda on Friday, November 27. During his visit to the country, he will hold Mass at Uhuru Park, Nairobi, which is expected to bring together hundreds of thousands of Catholics.

Bishop Alfred Rotich of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops says that Kenyans should expect a message of hope and solidarity from Pope Francis.

“He will be sending a message of hope especially to the youth and the poor people. When we visited him in Rome, he asked about the Garissa terrorist attack and mentioned that he will be coming to comfort the people of Kenya,” Bishop Rotich said.

Pope Francis, a passionate advocate for the environment, will also visit the United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) headquarters in Gigiri to discuss challenges and strategies of environmental stability.

He is also expected to hold meetings with religious leaders including Christians, Muslims, Hindus and traditionalists to discuss challenges of religious tolerance and strategies towards co-existence.

The pontiff will also hold a meeting with young people from all over the country and one of the slums in Nairobi to highlight the plight of poverty.

The Pope will also hold bilateral talks with President Kenyatta and they are expected to discuss issues to do with education, health and economic empowerment.

“I am not privy to what he will say but looking at the Pope generally, he will touch on human dignity and that we must respect life right from conception. He will visit a slum to send a message about the poor and the environment,” the Bishop said.

Last month, the Pope made historic visits to Cuba and the US and met with leaders of the two countries.
